In Kochi, the government has directed a compensation payment of Rs 25,000 to be made to a complainant named Sojish of Nettoor, following an order from the state human rights commission. The additional chief secretary of the home department issued the order, stipulating that the compensation should be deducted in three equal instalments from the salary of the former Sub-Inspector (SI) of Panangad who was accused in the case. Justice JB Kosi, the commission's chairman, issued the compensation order after Sojish, a member of a scheduled caste, was allegedly beaten by the former Panangad SI, Vipin AB. The complaint stated that Sojish was taken into custody by the former SI's police team without authorization after being hospitalized. Sojish lodged a complaint with the commission, which then directed that a case be filed against the SI and compensation be provided. Although a probe was conducted and departmental action in the form of a reprimand was taken against the SI, no compensation had been given prior to this government directive. It was noted that the former SI had the opportunity to present a counter-argument before the commission's final decision, but failed to do so, leading to the government's decision to award the compensation to Sojish.
